A six-session coaching journey towards a more restful life
What if rest wasn't something you had to earn, but something you could learn to receive?
In a world that often encourages us to stay busy, keep achieving and always move forward, making time to rest can be surprisingly difficult.
Perhaps you find it hard to switch off at the end of the day. Perhaps you feel guilty when you take time for yourself, or your days are so full of responsibilities that you rarely have space to rest, take care of yourself and enjoy time with fun activities with friends and family?
Receiving the Gift of Rest is a six-session individual coaching programme inspired by my reflections on rest inspired by my sabbatical experience. Through thoughtful conversations, personal reflection and small practical experiments, you will have the opportunity to explore your relationship with rest and discover what a more restful and intentional way of living could look like for you.
Your journey will be unique. There is no single right way to rest, and the aim is not to give you another list of things to achieve. It is to help you discover what works for you.
The programme is inspired by my personal reflections on rest and the Christian tradition of Sabbath.
If faith is important to you, we can explore how your relationship with God might shape your understanding and experience of rest.
You are equally welcome if you approach rest from a practical, reflective or broader spiritual perspective.
Our conversations will be guided by your values, beliefs and preferences.
Recognise what you need and what you are longing for.
We begin by exploring what rest means to you and how it currently fits into your life. You will have space to reflect on your everyday routines, your responsibilities and what prompted you to seek a different relationship with rest.
Together, we will identify what you would like to gain from the programme and what you hope to make more space for.
Discover the value of simply being, rather than always doing.
Rest is not only about stopping work or taking a break. It can also mean finding moments of presence, stillness and connection amid everyday life.
We will explore what helps you feel grounded and at ease, what makes it difficult to pause, and how you might create small opportunities to slow down and be more present.
Explore trust, control and the freedom of putting things down.
Sometimes, even when we stop working, our minds continue to race through unfinished tasks and responsibilities.
This session offers an opportunity to reflect on what you find difficult to put down, what is within your control, and what you might allow yourself to leave until later. You will explore simple ways to mark the end of the day and make space to rest in the evening.
Reconnect with the people, places and experiences that nourish you.
Different things restore us in different ways. It might be time outdoors, time with friends, reading, creativity, quiet reflection or simply having space to yourself.
We will explore what genuinely refreshes you, what may have been missing from your life, and how you could make more room for the experiences that help you feel connected, alive and renewed.
Understand what gets in the way and discover what rest means to you.
Knowing that we need rest does not always make it easy to take it. Expectations, habits, feelings of guilt, practical responsibilities and the pressure to be productive can all play a part.
Together, we will explore the beliefs and circumstances that make rest challenging and consider how you might protect time for yourself. We will also reflect on what gives rest meaning in your life, beyond simply recovering so that you can do more.
Turn your reflections into a realistic way forward.
In our final session, we will bring together what you have discovered about your needs, your relationship with rest and the practices that help you feel nourished.
You will have the opportunity to design a personal day or period of rest inspired by the idea of Sabbath, adapted to your circumstances, values and commitments. We will also consider how you can carry your learning forward and make space for rest in everyday life.
This programme may be a good fit if you are longing to slow down, reconsider your priorities, reconnect with what nourishes you or develop a healthier relationship with rest.
You do not need to have all the answers before you begin. You simply need a willingness to pause, reflect and explore.
